Beyond the Gallop: What Happened to Psy?
Back in 2012, it was practically impossible to escape the infectious horse-riding dance of “Gangnam Style.” Park Jae-sang, globally known as Psy, became an overnight international phenomenon. His hit smashed internet records, turning YouTube metrics on their head and making him the first Korean artist to truly conquer the Western mainstream music market on a massive scale.
So, what happened after the dust settled on the global craze? Far from fading away, Psy’s career evolved into something entirely different—transitioning from a viral pop star to a powerhouse entertainment mogul, concert titan, and domestic icon.
The Burden and Blessing of “Gangnam Style”
Psy has often spoken candidly about the double-edged sword of his biggest hit, describing “Gangnam Style” as both “a dream and a nightmare.” While it brought him global fame, trying to recreate that exact lightning-in-a-bottle moment for Western audiences proved exhausting. Follow-up tracks like “Gentleman” and “Daddy” performed well, but the intense pressure eventually pushed Psy to pivot away from chasing international charts and refocus on his roots in South Korea.
Becoming a Music Mogul: P Nation
In 2019, Psy entered a new era by launching his own entertainment agency and label, P Nation. Moving away from traditional, highly restrictive K-pop management styles, Psy built a label designed to give artists more creative freedom.
P Nation quickly made waves by signing major industry names—such as Jessi, HyunA, Dawn, and Hwasa—and launching new generation talent. As a CEO, Psy traded his stage sunglasses for boardroom suits, actively producing, mentoring, and shaping the next wave of Korean pop culture.
The King of Live Concerts: “Summer Swag”
While international audiences might view him primarily through the lens of a viral throwback, within South Korea, Psy is celebrated as a live performance legend.
He is the mastermind behind the famous “Summer Swag” tour—massive, stadium-filling music festivals characterized by endless water cannons, high-energy dance numbers, and star-studded guest lineups (ranging from BTS members to major K-pop girl groups). These annual events routinely sell out in minutes, cementing his status as an elite entertainer who commands the stage like few others. He also remains a staple of South Korea’s famous high-energy university festival circuit.
Staying Power and Recent Headlines
Psy continues to release music on his own terms. His 2022 album, Ssada 9, featured the smash single “That That,” which was co-produced by and featured Suga of BTS, proving he could still dominate charts.
