Dr. Vikas Divyakirti is one of the most prominent educators and mentors in India’s civil services preparation landscape, but strictly speaking, he was not an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.

The Real Story Behind His UPSC Journey

Dr. Vikas Divyakirti successfully cleared the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination in 1996 on his very first attempt at the age of 22. He achieved an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.

Because service allocations depend on rank, category, and preference, AIR 384 did not allocate him to the IAS cadre. Instead, he was assigned to the Central Secretariat Service (CSS). He served as a Section Officer (Desk Officer) in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

Why He Resigned

Although securing a central government post is a dream for millions of aspirants, Dr. Divyakirti found that routine administrative work did not align with his true passion for academia, literature, and teaching.

After serving for approximately one year, he resigned from government service in 1997. He chose not to use his remaining UPSC attempts and instead focused entirely on education.

Building Drishti IAS

In 1999, Dr. Divyakirti founded Drishti IAS in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi. His goal was to provide guidance and resources for civil services aspirants, particularly those appearing for the exam through the Hindi medium.

Over the decades, he has mentored tens of thousands of students and trained numerous successful candidates who went on to become IAS, IPS, and IFS officers. Today, he remains widely celebrated as an educator, author, and public speaker.
