Google Vids has revolutionized how teams collaborate on presentations, pitch decks, and short-form corporate media. By bringing timeline-based video editing directly into the Google Workspace ecosystem, it allows users to weave together stock footage, AI-generated clips, voiceovers, and transitions with the same ease as editing a Google Doc.
However, diving into a new timeline editor often brings a few UI learning curves—most notably when dealing with raw media orientation. If you have uploaded a clip that is sideways or upside down, you might be looking around for a quick “rotate” button.
Here is what you need to know about handling video orientation in Google Vids, along with the best workarounds to get your clips facing the right way.
The Short Answer: Direct Video Rotation Isn’t Built-In
Currently, Google Vids does not feature a native tool to rotate video clip orientation directly on the canvas.
While Google Vids allows you to rotate images, text boxes, and shapes using its format and arrangement options, video clips are treated differently by the timeline engine. Clicking on a video clip opens up options for sizing, positioning, volume, transitions, and playback timing—but rotation controls are omitted from the video format panel.
How to Fix Your Video Orientation Before Uploading
Because you cannot spin a video clip 90 or 180 degrees natively inside the Vids timeline, you must correct the file’s orientation before adding it to your project. Fortunately, doing this takes only a few seconds using tools you likely already have:
- Use Your Computer’s Native Editor:
- Windows: Open the video in the default Photos app, click the Edit button (or press
Ctrl + E), and use the rotate icon until the video is right-side up. Save and export the corrected file. - Mac: Open the video in QuickTime Player or Preview, go to the top menu, select Modify, and choose Rotate Left or Rotate Right. Save the changes.
- Windows: Open the video in the default Photos app, click the Edit button (or press
- Use Google Photos: If your video is stored on your mobile device or in the cloud, open it up in Google Photos, tap Edit, select the Crop menu, and use the rotate tool. Once saved, download the properly oriented file to your computer.
- Quick Online Editors: If you are on a restricted work machine or need a fast browser-based fix, lightweight free web utilities can rotate an MP4 file in seconds without requiring heavy software installation.
Once your video file is oriented correctly on your local drive, simply drop it back into your Google Vids scene canvas.
Understanding Google Vids Canvas Specifications
While you can’t rotate the video itself within the app, Google Vids does give you control over the overall project canvas shape. Ensuring your project matches your media format prevents awkward letterboxing or cropping. In your project settings, you can toggle between three primary aspect ratios:
- Widescreen (16:9): The standard horizontal format for desktop presentations and YouTube (1920 x 1080).
- Vertical (9:16): Perfect for mobile-first content, Shorts, or social media clips (1080 x 1920).
- Square (1:1): Ideal for specialized grid layouts and social feeds (1080 x 1080).
By ensuring your raw video files are oriented properly before importing them into your timeline, you can keep your Google Vids workflow smooth, professional, and frustration-free.
