Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS Officer? Unpacking the Truth Behind the Legend

When millions of young Indians begin their grueling journey to crack the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination—widely considered India’s toughest exam—few names command as much immediate reverence as Dr. Vikas Divyakirti.

As the founder and managing director of Drishti IAS, a premier coaching institute based in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar, he is a household name. With millions of followers on YouTube, viral lecture clips on social media, and even a cameo appearance as himself in the hit 2023 biographical drama 12th Fail, he is often treated like a superstar.

Because of his profound expertise, mastery over subjects like Hindi literature, philosophy, and socio-political issues, and his deep association with the civil services ecosystem, a common question often arises: Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?

The short answer is no, he is not an IAS officer. However, his relationship with the civil services is deeper and more unique than a simple “yes” or “no” implies.

The Real Story: Clearing the UPSC Exam and Resigning

While Dr. Divyakirti is not an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer, he did clear the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

  • The Attempt and Rank: In 1996, at the young age of 23, he cleared the prestigious UPSC exam on his very first attempt, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.
  • The Allotment: Following his success, he was selected for the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) and briefly served as a section officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.
  • The Resignation: True to his passion for academics and teaching, Divyakirti realized that a bureaucratic desk job wasn’t his ultimate calling. After serving for only a few months, he made the bold, unconventional choice to resign from his government post to follow his true love: education and mentoring.

From Civil Servant Dropout to Coaching Icon

Choosing to walk away from a secure, prestigious government job raised eyebrows at the time, but it paved the way for a massive cultural shift in Indian test preparation.

In November 1999, Dr. Divyakirti laid the foundation of Drishti IAS. What started as a modest classroom with just a handful of students has since expanded into a sprawling educational empire. He is widely credited with leveling the playing field for Hindi-medium aspirants, who historically faced structural disadvantages in competing against English-fluent candidates.
