Johannes Pietsch: The Pop-Opera Phenom Reshaping Modern Music
Johannes Pietsch (born April 29, 2001), widely known by his stage name JJ, is an Austrian singer and songwriter who captured international acclaim by winning the Eurovision Song Contest. Blending the dramatic grandeur of classical opera with infectious contemporary pop, Pietsch has carved out a unique space for himself in the European music landscape.
Early Life and Global Roots
Born in Vienna, Austria, to an Austrian father and a Filipino mother, Pietsch’s formative years were marked by a rich blend of cultures. He spent the majority of his childhood growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
His household provided a dual musical education:
- Pop Music: Explored through family karaoke sessions and modern radio.
- Opera: Introduced by his father, instilling an early appreciation for classical compositions.
In 2016, Pietsch and his family moved back to Vienna. Eager to pursue his passion professionally, he immersed himself in rigorous classical training, attending the prestigious opera school of the Vienna State Opera before continuing his studies at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.
Stepping Into the Spotlight
Before achieving mainstream glory, Pietsch tested his mettle on prominent television talent platforms:
- The Voice UK (2020): After missing the application deadline for The Voice of Germany, he turned to the UK iteration, successfully advancing to the Knockout rounds under the mentorship of will.i.am.
- Starmania (2021): The following year, he competed in the fifth season of Austria’s popular talent series, reaching the first final show.
Historic Eurovision Victory
Pietsch’s career reached a turning point on January 30, 2025, when Austrian broadcaster ORF announced him as the nation’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel, Switzerland. Performing under his stage name JJ, he debuted the power ballad “Wasted Love,” which he co-wrote alongside Teodora Špirić and producer Thomas Thurner.
On May 17, 2025, JJ clinched a monumental victory in the grand final, scoring a total of 436 points (dominating the jury vote with 258 points and securing 178 points from the televote).
This victory broke several records:
- He became the first Eurovision winner of Southeast Asian descent.
- He made history as the first solo Eurovision champion born in the 21st century.
Musical Style and Artistry
Pietsch performs as a sopranist (utilizing a soprano range characteristic of a countertenor). His distinct vocal capabilities allow him to leap effortlessly from rich, resonant lower registers into soaring high soprano heights. This hybrid pop-opera discipline defines his artistic identity, offering listeners an intense, theatrical interpretation that bridges generations of music lovers.
Following his Eurovision triumph, JJ released his debut extended play (EP) in May 2026 under Manifester Music and Warner Germany, accompanied by promotional tours like Act I: The Introduction and the Into The Unknown Tour.
“We, the artists, can only raise our voices…” — Johannes Pietsch, reflecting on his platform and desire to advocate for positive cultural and social change.
Personal Life
Multilingual and globally minded, Pietsch speaks German, English, and Tagalog. Openly queer, he has frequently voiced his commitment to being a visible, supportive voice for the LGBTQ+ community in Austria and beyond. Beyond music, he continues to use his expanding public platform to speak candidly about social issues, championing inclusivity and artistic integrity in the modern industry.
