Concrete Giants: Exploring Africa’s Longest Airport Runway
When people think of aviation milestones, they often picture massive jumbo jets, bustling multi-terminal hubs, or record-breaking non-stop flights. However, one of the most fascinating pieces of engineering infrastructure sits quietly on the ground: the airport runway.
Across the African continent, aviation demands unique engineering feats to handle heavy cargo, intense heat, and high altitudes. Holding the crown for the longest airport runway in Africa is Upington International Airport in South Africa, a facility whose asphalt strip stretches out like a highway into the horizon.
The Giant of the Northern Cape: Upington Airport
Located in the semi-arid Northern Cape region of South Africa, Upington International Airport boasts its famous Runway 17/35, which measures an astonishing 4,900 meters (16,076 feet)—nearly 5 kilometers long. To put that into perspective, it is long enough to accommodate nearly 45 football fields laid end-to-end.
